I really enjoy thanking people. For all kinds of things: jobs well done, excellent service, helping me out, hosting me, being a good friend, plus many more. I feel uplifted by the simple gesture of saying "Thank you for your great service."
By way of example, I mention the clerks and reference librarians at my branch library, the Sahara West Library in Las Vegas. They really take good care of me as I do my research for this newsletter. We have become good friends over many years.
I recommend that you be generous, not stingy, with thanks. In most cases, "what goes around, comes around."
For example, as Dr. Robert Emmons has shown in his fine book, "Thanks: How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier,"
●People who regularly practice grateful thinking (and expression) can increase their "set-point" for happiness by as much as 25 percent.
● A grateful heart is a healthy heart. That is, people who practice expressing gratitude have stronger hearts.
●As well, those who practice "an attitude of gratitude" live longer
● Those on the receiving end of your expressions of gratitude also benefit in many ways, among them gaining a heart-rhythm that supports good health and well-being.
One of my most satisfying experiences has been to phone a former teacher or boss to let them know how much I appreciated their help "back then." They are usually surprised because the call is coming "out of the blue."
Most of us have such unfinished business we can still take care of. If not with a phone call, then perhaps a written note of thanks. Even if much-belated, your expression will matter.
As we approach Thanksgiving week, who has been a person who helped you along the way of life? If the person is no longer alive, perhaps you can proclaim your gratitude at some Thanksgiving gathering with family or friends.
Be generous with your thanks. Dozens of opportunities happen each week when you encounter others. Which ones have you overlooked?

"You really listen to me carefully, and I thank you for that."
"Whenever I ask for a small favor, you quickly grant it. Many thanks."
Give thanks. They'll feel better, and you'll feel better.
